Music

From the time MDCA students enter their kindergarten music class, they learn to work together
as an ensemble toward a common goal. The fundamentals of music are the primary focus in
kindergarten and first grade. In second grade, students begin to learn their first instrument, the
ukulele. Our third-grade students learn the recorder as their first wind instrument. Students in
fourth grade get to experience music of different cultures through our world drumming unit.
Fifth-grade students at MDCA are given an opportunity afforded by very few schools: beginning
band. They learn traditional band instruments like the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone,
further preparing them to decide if they want to continue with band as an elective in their
secondary years.

Students in grades K–5 are showcased in multiple programs throughout the year. In the fall,
students participate in the elementary Christmas program. In the spring, students have the
opportunity to participate in our Grandparents Day program.

As students transition into their secondary years at MDCA, they have the opportunity to expand
their musical training through specialized electives in chorus and piano.

Middle & High School Chorus
The chorus program emphasizes the development of healthy vocal technique, ensemble
singing, and music literacy. Students explore a wide range of repertoire, including classical
works, contemporary Christian music, and popular selections, while learning the discipline of
following a conductor and performing as a unified ensemble. Performances throughout the
year—at concerts, chapel services, and community events—allow students to share their
growth and artistry. Beyond performance, chorus fosters teamwork, confidence, and an
appreciation for the power of collective music-making.

Piano Class
The piano program provides students with a solid foundation in keyboard performance.
Instruction begins with note reading, rhythm, and proper technique, progressing to more
advanced repertoire as skills develop. Students experience both solo and small-group playing,
building independence as musicians while also learning the value of collaboration. The course
encourages creativity and expression, giving students the tools to pursue piano both as an
academic discipline and a lifelong skill.
